+ Is the book funny?

Yes, if you like horse poo

+ I've never tried jiu jitsu will I like it?

You don't need to have tried martial arts to enjoy the book and you don't need to read the book to try jiu jitsu. But I think you should try both!

+ I'd like to try jiu jitsu. Where can I train?

Go to jitsufoundation.org there are adult and junior clubs all over the UK and even internationally.

+ Did you draw the cover?

No, I'm not THAT clever. The cover is by Helena Perez Garcia.

+ Is Lettice a real name? It is silly!

Or course it is real. YOUR name is silly.

+ Did the suffragettes really do jiu jitsu?

Yes! They also trained in Schwingen, Bartitsu and used Indian clubs to stop the Police from arresting them and their leaders when they went on their protests.

+ If her Mum is a suffragette and Dad is a policeman, does that mean they fight a lot?

Mums and Dads everywhere often fight a lot, even as long ago as 1910, and it can feel pretty lonely when they do. However, by making friends Lettice learns how to cope when home life gets a bit too much.

+ Can boys do jiu jitsu?

Yes, a lot of my Senseis (teachers) are men and they are very good at jiu jitsu. Mr Garrud and Mr Tani also train with Lettice and the suffragettes and later on, the Police in London are also trained in some jiu jitsu techniques.

+ There is an Asian girl on the cover - were there people from other countries living in London back then?

Yes! London in 1910 was a huge port, with ships from all over the world. There were generations of British families whose ancestors came from overseas. Queen Victoria's own God daughter was called Sophia Singh and although her father was from India she was born in England. She was also a Suffragette, and quite a naughty one. Lettice likes her a lot, although she isn't the girl on the cover...

+ I have a fear of horse poo. Should I read this book?

Hmmm... Edith Garrud would encourage you to challenge your fears. So yes, don't let fear stop you from doing anything you want to do!

+ I am a teacher is this book suitable for the classroom?
